Still no word on St. Boniface

(POSTED: 8/10/09) At the end of last month, it sounded like a deal might be close on developing the historic -- and vacant -- St. Boniface Church in Chicago.
There's still no word on any breakthrough, although it appears all sides still are talking.
"The short answer is we don't have an answer yet," a spokeswoman for the Daley administration said Friday. "We are working towards a resolution, but we have not yet come to determination."
The Archdiocese of Chicago owns the crumbling Romanesque structure at Chestnut and Noble, just north and west of the Loop.
While the archdiocese has been willing to sell the site, it also has pushed for demolition -- and has the necessary permits from the city to knock the building down at any time.
City officials and preservationists are pushing for St. Boniface to be saved, and redeveloped.
The latest word is a developer is interested in converting the property into some sort of complex for the elderly. But the developer also reportedly is seeking hefty government subsidies.
ChicagoCatholicNews has asked the cardinal's press office for an update on St. Boniface several times over the past two weeks but has gotten no response.
