Afghan Journal: Chicago priest in a war zone

(POSTED: 9/16/09) The Rev. Matt Foley is a Roman Catholic priest who, in 2008, gave up a parish assignment at St. Agnes of Bohemia in Chicago's Little Village neighborhood to go to war. More to the point, he joined the Army as a chaplain. Now posted in Afghanistan, Father Matt has agreed to send occasional dispatches to ChicagoCatholicNews, sharing his experiences. What follows is his first email correspondence:
I am close to the Afghanistan border visiting a group of soldiers on a mountain top local. I arrived here 0100 Monday morning with a couple of Blackhawks. The soldiers live simply and pull round the clock guard duty. We had Mass yesterday and will have daily Mass everyday until we can get a helicopter back out here to pick us up.
I travel with my assistant on these trips out of Bagram Air Field. Sgt. Robinson and I form our UMT (unit ministry team) for our 82nd DSTB. Our major focus is the 1,400 82nd troopers who make up the 82nd DSTB in Bagram. These troopers are support for the 82nd Division who is currently responsible for the east region of Afghanistan.
I came out to this area to help cover some FOBs [forward operating bases] that have not had a Roman Catholic priest visit in some time. The last time this local had Mass was over 50 days ago. The soldiers appreciate our visit and receiving the Eucharist. We spend time visiting the guard towers and also go out on patrol with the soldiers.
The views are tremendous from our current location. Our position is heavily fortified. This is the fourth stop on our short tour offering Roman Catholic coverage. If the weather holds and they send a few helicopters we should be back in Bagram to celebrate the five weekend Masses I have to cover on my home base.
The Rev. Matt Foley
