New bishop appointed to Diocese of Rockford
(POSTED: 3/20/12) Pope Benedict XVI announced today a new bishop to lead the Diocese of Rockford.
Msgr. David John Malloy, a Milwaukee native, has been chosen as the 9th bishop of the diocese, which covers 11 counties in Northern Illinois. He will replace Bishop Thomas Doran, who is retiring.
Malloy, 56, is currently pastor of St. Francis de Sales in Lake Geneva, Wis. He graduated from Marquette University in 1978 with a degree in biology, and then studied to be a priest at St. Francis de Sales Seminary in Milwaukee and at the Gregorian University in Rome.
In 1983, Malloy was ordained to the priesthood.
From 1986 to 1990, he attended the Pontifical Ecclesiastical Academy where he received a degree in canon law from the Pontifical University of St. Thomas and a doctorate in sacred theology from the Gregorian University. He studied for the Vatican Diplomatic Corps and has served assignments in Syria and Pakistan. He was also general secretary of the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops from 2006 to 2011.
